이 세상에는 2개의 사랑받는 풍뎅이가 있는데, 그중에 하나는 독일의 유명 자동차 메이커 폭스바겐의 베스트셀러 제품인 ‘비틀’ 이요, 다른 하나는 영국 리버풀 출신의 남성 4인조 밴드인 ‘비틀즈’ 이다. 자동차 ‘비틀’ 처럼 팬들의 요구에 의해서 재생산되어질 수는 없다지만, 오늘날 우리는 비틀즈, 그들이 전성기를 구가하던 그 당시보다 다양한 루트를 통해 그들을 느낄 수 있지 않은가. 영국 BBC 라디오 방송국 라이브 실황 앨범이 어느 창고에서 발견되어졌더라, 비틀즈의 미공개 데모 테잎이 영국의 수집가에 의해 세상에 공개되었다 등등의 구차할정도로 많은 이유를 달고 수없이, 끊임없이 재생산 되어지고 있으니 말이다. 여기 또하나의 비틀즈 관련 앨범이 나와 있으니… 도대체 어떤 사연을 담은 앨범인지 궁금하지 않을 수 없다. 아니 의심이 가지 않을 수 없다.
영화 <아이 엠 샘> OST 는 (국내반의 경우) 총 19곡의 비틀즈 커버곡으로 채워져 있다. 왜 커버곡이냐? 본래 의도는 이렇다. 영화 <아이 엠 샘> 의 감독 제시 넬슨 ( ’94 <코리나 코리나> 를 직접 감독하기도 하였으며, <스템맘>, <스토리 오브 어스> 의 각본을 담당하기도 하였다. 또한 다수의 TV 시리즈와 영화에 조연 여배우로 출연하기도 하였다. ) 은 영화제작을 위해 방문한 한 요양원의 정신지체 장애자들을 통해 그들에게 있어서 비틀즈의 존재감이 얼마나 큰것인가를 알게되고 자신의 영화에 비틀즈의 음악을 전면에 부각시키기로 결심하게 된다. 애초의 계획은 OST 앨범 전체를 비틀즈의 오리지널 곡으로 채우려 하였으나 까다로운 라이센스 취득권으로 말미암아 이내 포기하고 만다. 그러한 이유로 선택된 차선책이 후배 뮤지션들에 의해 재탄생된 일종의 비틀즈 트리뷰트 앨범이였던 것이다. 하지만 문제는 여기서 끝난 것이 아니였다. 설령 리메이크된 곡이라 할지라도 비틀즈의 오리지날 곡의 분위기를 크게 벗어나는 곡은 용납할 수 없다는 통보를 받게 된것이다. 곡의 길이나 전체적인 음악의 박자 등등의 세세한 조건까지 들먹이면서… 이러한 까닭에 내놓으라하는 모던/얼터너티브 락 밴드들은 가능한한 자신들의 개성을 최대한 드러나지 않도록 대선배인 비틀즈의 곡을 연주해야 했으며, 시건방진 그들만의 비틀즈 재평가하기 따위의 시도는 애당초 전면봉쇄당하고 말았다. 우여곡절 끝에 탄생한 본 앨범은 비록 참신한 맛은 덜한다 느껴짐은 어쩔 수 없겠지만 쟁쟁한 실력을 겸비한 모던/얼터너티브 락 밴드들을 한자리에서, 그것도 영원한 팝스타 비틀즈라는 공통된 테두리 안에서 만나 볼 수 있다는 것은 본래 비틀즈 팬들에게 뿐만 아니라 모든 음악팬들에게는 뜻 밖에 누리는 행운임에는 틀림없을 것이다.
팝 시장의 두 강대국이자 또한 서로 판이한 음악세계관을 보이고 있는 영국과 미국을 대표하는 모던/얼터너티브 락 밴드들이 앨범에 참여하였다. 트레이시 채프맨 (Tracy Chapman) 과 함께 미국을 대표하는 폭크 록 여성 가수 에이미 맨 (Aimee Mann) 과 숀 펜의 친형으로 알려진 마이클 펜 (Michael Penn) 이 함께 부른 Two Of Us 에서는 본래 그녀의 따사로운 감성이 돋보인다. 영화 <매그놀리아> OST 를 통해서 이미 영화음악 작업에 적을 두고 있는 그녀는 역시 영화 <굿 윌 헌팅> OST 로 유명한 엘리엇 스미스 (Elliot Smith) 와 함께 미국 챔버 팝을 대표하는 여가수 이기도 하다. 에이미 만과 같은 챔버 팝 아티스트이자 또한 일반적이지 못한 성정체성과 유년시절 누렸던 풍요로운 문화적 유산으로 인해 남다른 감성을 소유한 루퍼스 와인라이트 (Rufus Wainwright) 도 Across The Universe 로 앨범에 참여하고 있다. 특히 그의 긴 호흡이 유발시키는 묘한 긴장감으로 인해 곡의 생명력이 한결 살아나는 듯 하다. 앨범내에서 가장 높은 완성도와 참신성을 보여주는 Strwberry Fields Forever 로 앨범에 참여한 벤 하퍼 (Ben Harper) 의 음악적 모태는 흑인음악이라 할 수 있겠다. 지미 핸드릭스 (Jimi Hendrix) 의 기타 블루스, 밥 말리 (Bob Marley) 의 라틴음악, 그리고 알 그린 (Al Green) 의 소울, 훵키까지… 그토록 흑인음악의 정체성에 주를 두고 있던 그가 이번에는 고혹적이고 서정적이기 그지없는 풍성한 오케스트레이션을 선보이고 있다. 특히 전반부의 잘 정돈된 관현악 연주와 중반부를 넘어서부터 전복되어지기 시작하는 기존까지의 어레인지먼트는 가히 압권이라 하겠다. 후반부에 들어서는 싸이키델릭한 기타 리프 마저 주저없이 선보이고 있는데… 이와 같은 변화무쌍한 곡의 전개가 전혀 귀에 거슬리지 않음은 분명 벤 하퍼의 뛰어난 음악성이 뒷받침 되어주기에 가능한 일일것이다.
이젠 어느덧 전설이 되어버린 밴드 벤 폴즈 파이브 (Ben Folds Five) 의 리더 벤 폴즈 (Ben Folds) 가 Golden Slumbers 를 부르고 있다. 예전 그룹 활동시절에도 물론 그러하였거니와 그의 광범위한 음악사조를 기반으로 하는 뛰어난 곡 해석력은 가히 당대 최고라 할만하다. 1분43초라는 짧은 런닝타임이 아쉬울 정도로 그의 아련한 서정미는 시들지 않았음을 잘 느낄 수 있는 트랙이다. 최근 비틀즈와 너바나 (Nirvana) 의 결합이라는 최고의 찬사를 등에 업고 데뷔앨범을 발매하기도 했던 바인스 (The Vines) 의 I’m Onlly Sleeping 역시 주목할만한 트랙이다. 원곡 자체의 멜로디가 유려하기에 여러 뮤지션들에 의해 심심찮게 라이브 현장에서 불리워졌던 곡이기도 하다. 바인스의 보컬과 기타를 담당하고 있는 크레이그 니콜스 (Craig Nicholls) 의 그것은 너바나의 커트 코베인 (Kurt Cobain) 보다는 본 앨범에도 참여하고 있는 스테레오포닉스 (Stereophonics) 의 켈리 존슨 (Kelly Jones) 이나 오아시스 (Oasis) 의 리엄 갤러거 (Liam Gallagher) 를 보다 많이 연상케 하는데… 적당량(?)의 허스키한 보컬이 매력적이다. 영국에서 지방색이 가장 강하다는 웨일즈 출신으로 어딘지 모르게 촌스러움을 풍기는 외모와 풋풋한 싱그러움을 느끼게 하는 음악성을 선보이고 있는 스테레오포닉스 (Stereophonics) 는 Don’t Let Me Down 으로 앨범에 참여하고 있다. 보컬 켈리 존스의 꾸밈없는 솔직담백한 보컬을 담아내고 있다. 앨범에 수록되어진 비틀즈 곡중 가장 대중적으로 널리 알려진 Help 와 Let It Be 는, 하지만 원곡과 그 흐름을 가장 많이 달리 하는 곡이기도 하다. Howie Day 가 부른 Help 는 원곡 본래의 힘차고 역동적인 분위기와는 사뭇다른 애닮픈 곡조를 써내려가고 있으며, Let It Be 를 그 특유의 냉소적인 시선과 절제된 미를 살려 닉 케이브 (Nick Cave) 가 부르고 있다. 이 외에도 가장 의외라 싶은 그랜대디 (Grandaddy) 의 유머러스함이 잘 배어있는 Revolution, 수잔 베가 (Susan Vega) 의 뒤를 잇는 미국 포크계의 여장부 사라 맥라클란 (Sarah Mclachlan) 의 Blackbird, 밥 딜런 (Bob Dylan) 의 친아들인 제이콥 딜런 (Jacob Dylan) 이 이끄는 그룹 월플라워스 (Wallflowers) 가 부른 I’m Looking Through You. 또한 제이콥 딜런의 애인이자 역시 미국의 포스트 포크락 세대를 이끌어가는 쉐릴 크로우 (Sheryl Crow) 의 Mother Nature’s Son 까지 알차게 앨범을 채우고 있다.
국내에 소개된 <아이 엠 샘> OST 앨범은 해외반과는 달리 에이미 만이 부른 Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds 와 닐 핀 (Neil Finn) 과 리암 핀 (Liam Finn) 이 함께 부른 Two Of Us 가 추가로 수록되어있기도 하다. 저작권 문제로 인해 3주 만에 급조되다시피 만들어진 앨범. 원곡의 분위기를 위배해서는 안된다는 엄중한 경고와 감시속에 참신성을 강탈당한 느낌이 없진 않지만, 앨범에 참여하고 있는 뮤지션들 모두 비틀즈의 노래를 듣고 가수의 꿈을 키웠을 이들이기에 어찌보면 이 앨범은 그들이 비틀즈의 음악을 듣고 경도되었을 당시부터 계획되었던 앨범일런지도 모를 일이다. 분명 실보다는 득이 많은 수작임에는 분명하다.
